Going offline to make some changes

Hi,

on Saturday morning at 7am (PST) I will be taking the site down for a few hours. I know, I know, I hate to do it too, but it will be necessary for the changes I have in mind.

The primary issue is to see if I can get the site to render correctly in IE6, or as I call that elder browser, the web developer's ball and chain. I know it's not nice to denigrate the work that has been done by lots of people over the years to make this browser what it is today, but look at what it is today!! Not standards-complaint. Thanks Microsoft.

That said, all the ranting will not change the fact that a growing percentage of this site's visitors use IE6, and their experience is not what it should be. As a web designer, I cannot live with that.

Gotta Love Microsoft

Aww, c'mon! You mean there's another IE6 hater out there. I thought it was just me. I have to say that it's a choke-hold trying to work with IE6. I just don't bother... well, mainly cause I have no idea what I am doing but also I am looking ahead at the emerging browser trend, and IE6 is a falling giant. It's death shadow is getting longer as it teeters to the ground. The introduction of Vista pretty much accelerates that death march, but it'll be a while before we get some browser parity in the web space.

BTW, I am adding you to my blogroll. I see good things happening on this site. Finally, an intelligent, well-designed, UG-centric news site. I am proud to have found it in it's infancy!

The unfortunate truth

Sadly, I have no choice but to tango with Redmond's Orthrus. My stats show that a number of people are using IE6 and not sticking around quite as long as those on other browsers. I cannot look to Vista with hope; the browser formerly known as Longhorn has not been what many expected, or at least hoped for so it is looking inevitably as though much of the world will be a little slow in adopting IE7. For me, this is really sad news because a significant part of my audience is in Uganda and the internet cafes are not always hip to the benefits of choosing updating an old browser or switching to Firefox (PLEASE PLEASE DO SO!!)

Thank you for the compliments regarding the design and content, and for adding me to your blogroll. The traffic has been good lately which motivates me to stay...motivated.
